Workshop

Transitioning to the private sector - the self employment option

Thinking of self employment? ICG is presenting this specially designed workshop to assist your needs in reaching an informed decision about making the necessary transition.

Tuesday 14th June 2011,
Jurys Inn, Exeter
Western Way, Exeter, EX1 2DB

Overview

The anticipated cuts in the funding of careers/personal adviser posts in Local Authorities have already started to impact on careers practitioners. With talk of services in the youth sector being devolved to schools and the political ambition being to increase the size of the private sector, a serious option for advisers worried about their own career and financial futures is to consider self employment.

Responding to the concerns of our members, this is the third of three one-day workshops which will focus on transitioning to the private sector. Run by members of the ICG, who have direct experience of doing just this, these events will offer a mix of plenary delivery, group sessions and action planning and promise to get you enthused about starting out on your own.

Feedback from the first event

"A good overview of what is involved, what is needed, and where to find business".

"Covered all levels and gave plenty of information".

"A well managed session with a healthy dose of active participation".

"Best advice that I have ever received on networking".

Learning outcomes

Our aim is to provide a contact-rich experience. Each course will:

1. Address the following questions:

  • Is it better to be employed or be your own boss?
  • Why am I considering this opportunity?
  • How will I know if I have made the right decision?
  • What can I charge clients?
  • What will my costs be?
  • How do I get clients?
  • Where am I going to operate?
  • What is the impact on my friends and family?

2. Develop a structured SWOT analysis and a chance to question the positives and mitigate the negatives.

3. Present the case studies of several practitioners who are part of the ICG Private Practitioners Community who have successfully made the transition.

4. Help you to start to build your own personal action plan by helping you with practical advice on:

  • Forecasting
  • Cash flow planning
  • Raising start-up capital
  • Grands and Advice
  • Liaisons and Associations
  • Networking for success
  • Marketing and sales
