ICG SW Branch Event

Monday 14th December 2009

1.00 pm to 4.30pm

University of the West of England Bristol

Taking opportunities afforded by the higher national profile for careers work in the UK

The SW Branch welcomes Dr Deirdre Hughes, the new ICG President, to give a presentation and provoke discussion on the following:

What are the current politics of career guidance? What are the tensions and the implications for the future of career guidance? What is influencing the direction of policy and how? What capacity has the individual got to influence their organisation/professional body to influence government?

Backdrop
The profile for careers education, information, advice and guidance for all ages has risen greatly in recent months and 2010 promises to be a big year ahead for the careers sector.

This will include a major ICG campaign for careers 2010, the national career guidance show on 3rd and 4th March in London, a proposed careers festival week following the general election, awareness raising on '10 key facts career specialists should know for sure', a revitalised ICG "six tests" concept linked to the potential all-age service versus all-age strategy discussions, consolidating young people's guidance delivery arrangements following the recent national strategy launches on IAG and impartial careers education ... and much more.  What with a general election next year and growing economic constraints in the public sector, times are certainly interesting!

After the break Phil Spooner will lead a practical workshop on the ICG's professional code of ethics, recently updated by the ethics and standards committee and shared at an excellent workshop during the national conference in Blackpool.  The emphasis will be illustrating the seven principles through group discussion on individual case studies which raise ethical issues and then making decisions on the most appropriate course of action.
