The Changing face of Career Management

On 20th October the Institute of Career Guidance and the Association for Career Professionals (ACP) held their first joint conference - The Changing Face of Career Management.

Panel

The event included presentations from Independent Consultant Bill Pitcher; William Buist, of Abelard Management Services; Dr Rachel Mulvey, University of East London and Ian Anderson, Bradford and Bingley.

This was an important and timely conference which looked at some of the implications of the economic downturn on career management services. It also demonstrated the practical benefits that can be gained from ICG and ACP working together.

Delegates

ICG President Richard Longson commented on the impact of the conference:

"This event brought together practitioners who represent a new face of the ICG. In many ways it was a historic meeting as it demonstrated in action the impact of the decision that was made to widen membership of the Institute. We were able to begin to show the Insitute as being the Institute of the whole sector and not just one part of it. The conference was not an end in itself, because it highlighted very clearly pathways forward for the ICG to support professionals in practice."

Claire Coldwell of ACP commented on the range of careers professionals represented:

"It was interesting to meet people from a variety of backgrounds and, in the main, representing a new group of attendees at these types of events - people who are actively developing their offering as career practitioners to a broader market. Partly this is driven by a desire to broaden earning potential, but also a recognition that the needs of clients - both current and potential - are changing. What we as an organisation need to ensure is that we remain client focused in supporting members to address those needs and at the same time maintain the integrity and professionalism which is a hallmark of our profession, whether currently we operate in the public or in the private sector. We can only do this by engaging in an ongoing dialogue with members - I am delighted that the ICG annual conference comes so hot on the heels of this one, because it means that momentum will continue, but regardless of that it is everyone's responsibility, as a member, to secure the development which they need at this time."
