Ida Groves, Vocational Guidance Officer, 1910-2002
We have only recently learnt of the death of Miss Ida M. Groves, an influential member of the National Association of Youth Employment Officers, subsequently the Institute of Career Guidance. She was President in 1946 when she chaired the annual meeting of a record number of delegates, many still wearing uniform as they prepared to rejoin their profession after the war. Her arrangements for the 1947 conference in Margate included the provision of a frigate, courtesy of the Royal Navy, to transport delegates from one venue to another.
Perhaps Ida Groves' greatest achievement was the foundation of the first full time training course for youth employment officers at Lamorbey Park, Sidcup. This bold step, taken in anticipation of demand for qualified staff by the new Youth Employment Service, was an immediate and enduring success.
As Vocational Guidance Officer for Kent she, together with her County Education Officer Ernest Woodhead, were often able to influence the national policy which led to an education based service. She is still remembered fondly within the county. One of the very first science graduates of Bedford College, London she applied her skill and ability to effective leadership and management. Carelessly drafted papers and letters were meticulously corrected. Hats and gloves were required when staff attended evening meetings and career events.
Ida Groves' involvement with the Kent training courses continued well into her retirement. She was especially concerned with selection of students and with the appraisals procedure. Many successful career advisers have cause to be grateful for her wisdom and judgment. |
