Current Question The new A*
The new A* at A Level is being introduced for 2010 in England, Northern Ireland and Wales. What do practitioners feel about this change? Any opinions on its effect?

I am not sure how many students this will affect. It will only take into consideration their results on A2 which are often lower than the AS module results with lower thresholds to achieve As. There is already transparency with them declaring their module marks. At my school people are wondering whether anyone will get an A* if it is based on just their A2 papers.

That's an excellent point Anthony. I asked one of my Heads of Sixth Form on what basis he would predict an A* at A Level and he felt very sketchy at this stage. He admitted he would probably go with the good old A*/A! Also in a report by the 94 group of Uni's (which I will attach to the next newsletter) some admissions tutors are concerned that the A* might make it harder for applicants from WP backgrounds to get into the most selective uni's.
