Current Question Introduction of new qualification in Maths
Hello. My College is considering the introduction of a new, level 2 qualification in Maths. This AQA course was named as a GCSE in the "Use of Maths" in a recent pilot study, but I understand it is to change (in name only) to the Higher Certificate in the Use of Maths, from September 2011. The depth and range of topics will remain the same giving it complete parity with a GCSE in all but name. I understand that it focuses less upon algebra, and more on day-to-day use of maths (money management etc). My query is this - do any members have experience of their students taking this qualification? How did they find it? What did teachers think of it as a qualification to teach and how it has been received by employers, universities etc? Thank you.

Our access students, aged 19+, doing an access course to gogo to uni to study nursing, teaching, social work etc, are having to take GCSE english and maths if applying for NURSING/MIDWIFERY as numeracy L2 and Literacy L2 will not be accepted at some of our universities as alternatives for either 2011 midwifery and 2013 nursing. Please check with the local unis for what they accept.

Thank you for your reply - I'm a little confused however! Are you saying that your students are now using the "Use of Maths" qualification to elevate the University recognition of their qualifications? It is specifically this AQA qual that I am interested in.

Hi sorry for any confusion. At present the University of Salford are insisting that our access students (19 years +) have maths and english at grade A-C and will not accept Adult literacy or numeracy. For 2013 entry this criteria will be exttended to all nursing courses applying to Salford. As a result our Level 2 access course is no more and students encouraged to take appropriate GCSE. I hope this is clearer now!
