Current Question Going it alone!
Hi Guys, I'm looking to work on a consultancy/self-employed basis. Any ideas what the going rate is for 1-1 careers consultancy - either daily or per hr. Your thoughts would be very useful and appreciated. Many thanks. Dee Cleary

Hi, I would be interested to know what the rates are. I am an AG team leader in Wales (free guidance to an all age public) and intending to retire next year (62).I live in England and would like to offer career coaching services to selected client group. I would not know what to charge on a private basis. Please let me know if and when you hear anything. Where are you based? Best wishes. Geert Jan Koning

Hi Geert, I'm hoping that this forum will encourage a few responses so we'll wait and see. I'm in the West Country. If you let me have your e-mail address, I can forward anything else I get.

Many thanks for your swift reply.
My email address is: jan.koning@careerswalesgwent.org.uk.
My full name is Geertjan but in Britain the hard "G" is difficult so it is "Jan" in work.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Dee I think the answer to your question is that the rate you can charge is directly related to your reputation, ability and how well known you become. My company has been establishing that reputation for two years and we can charge more now than we did originally. Establishing a "brand" and getting a good name for yourself is a very expensive business. Our brand name at www.careercam.co.uk has cost a great deal of money. Another option which you might consider is to be a self-employed associate using or brand name, advertising and tools which saves you up front costs. Hope this helps Regards John H

Thanks John, I've managed to get some rates to start off with. Also location is an issue and Cornwall is worse off than most so I will have to cater accordingly. Negotiation is the name of the game, I feel.

if you look on web sites you will see what other people charge - rates vary from below £30 an hour to over £200. I charge £80 for the first hour and £70 for subsequent hours and all my prices are listed on my web site.
