Introduction |
| After 18 years working for various Careers Services: Hampshire County Council, VT Southern Careers & lastly, Connexions, I decided last Easter to go it alone. I currently provide CEG consultancy services to a small independent school, responsible also for the careers lessons and the individual Career Guidance interviews. When our local Community Mental Health team needed some help to support clients on their pilot "Returning to work" programme, I was invited to help. They were interested to try out the "Adult Directions" computer aided guidance programme and asked me to train staff to use it with clients. A speculative phone call to our local Connexions Company last August, led to 7 months freelance work at a local secondary school, where the Careers Adviser (Personal Adviser) was on long term sick leave. The school needed career guidance interviews, group work sessions, and presentations and even some staff INSET on Kudos. One thing led to another and I was offered a 'trouble shooting' consultancy role at another school, where the Careers Education programme had fallen into disrepair! Other work has included occasional home based work, reviewing careers websites on behalf of a Careers Software publisher. Liberated now from mountainous administration and endless meetings, my spaniel & I are enjoying a much improved and flexible working schedule. I would be happy to exchange hints & tips especially on how to maintain a balanced 'portfolio' of private work. |

Re: Introduction |
Hi Anne
Although I don't work with schools, (my work is with adults at degree level and beyond)I would also be interested in hints and tips to maintain a balanced prtfolio of private work.
I better introduce myself. I have been running my own careers consultancy company for a year now and I am currently delivering a full time guidance contract for the Training and Development Agency for Schools. This involves supporting career changers and finders considering teaching, largely through telephone and e-guidance.
My contract is flexible and I am keen to develop my business, both through work with private clients and further contractual work. I would also be interested in exchanging ideas on expanding a careers based business. In particular, how other colleagues have successfully worked with private clients/ advertised their services. |

Re: Re: Introduction |
Hi Carol Good to receive your reply. I too would be very keen to hear how others have developed 1 to 1 guidance work with adults, especially via phone and e-mail services, plus would welcome some pointers re fee structuring. To date, I have had more success negotiating with organsiations than individuals! All ideas gratefully received. AP |

Re: Re: Re: Introduction |
Me too. I have answered endless queries re servicing and prices for individuals. I have called them and e-mailed and it never seems to develop into work. Perhaps I am doing something wrong?
The work I do by phone and e-mail is as a result of successfully tendering for a contract.
Sorry I can't offer any advice - in need of it myself along the same lines!
