Work Location: My current base is in Great Yarmouth having previously covered the Breckland, West Norfolk and Norwich areas of Norfolk. Having also looked after North Norfolk along the way I only need a spell in South Norfolk to complete the "set". I have previously worked in City of Westminster, Enfield and Essex
Contracts covered: The main thrust of my work is delivering on the NRF (Neighbourhood Renewal Fund) project which aims to give intensive and practical support to the unemployed which includes addressing the barriers people have in accessing learning and work. As well as giving individual guidance to clients I also have a responsibility to find new work which involves working closely with other organisations. In a similar vein I am looking to maintain and indeed extend the Nextstep network in the Great Yarmouth area which involves meeting lots of new people
Qualifications and brief work history:
- BEd (Hons (1980)
- Diploma in Career Guidance (Kent College for the Careers Service) 1982.
Although trained as a teacher I have never taught in earnest although I do very much enjoy presenting to small groups which fortunately my current role allows me to do. On graduation I moved directly into the Careers Service (as it was then) and apart from a "career break" in computing and insurance I have been a Careers Adviser ever since.
During that time I have worked with people of all ages and with most client types ranging from young people in schools, young unemployed, college students, the homeless, people with Mental Health Issues, people with Learning Disabilities, Offenders and ex-offenders (including a stint at Wayland Prison), graduates, people in employment (including redundancy counselling) as well as Workforce Development projects in the Care and Construction sectors.
What I enjoy about my work: The biggest buzz about doing what I do is putting people in touch with each other and attempting to make a difference to people's lives. I relish the challenges that my clients bring to me and thrive on helping them to overcome any barriers to learning and work they may have. There is a great autonomy and freedom to run my own diary but admittedly within the constraints of the bureaucracy of working on government contracts. |
