Commissioning Career Guidance ServicesWednesday 20th June Please be aware that the Newcastle event running on Monday 14th May has been cancelled. The last 12 months has seen huge and significant changes in area of careers education, information, advice and guidance in England. The Education Act, which comes into force in September 2012, places a new duty on Schools to secure access to career guidance, which must be independent and impartial. The Act also removes the statutory requirement to provide careers education in the school curriculum. The overall approach is ambitious: to free schools to provide whatever the career guidance they feel is in pupils' best interests. Additionally, and potentially more challenging, is the fact that all this has to be met out of existing budgets, with no additional funding being made available to schools as children and young people face increasing economic and labour market uncertainty. With career guidance services previously being accessed through Connexions, the critical question for headteachers and school management teams is: How do we commission high quality career guidance services?
