New UKRC Training Grants to help women's careers take off!

 23rd Oct 2008

The UKRC Training Grant is a new scheme to help women progress in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET).  The focus of the grant scheme is to support progression at professional and technical levels and increase retention at key stages in science, engineering and technology careers.

The grants may help with:

  • Moving from a support role to a technical role

  • Returning to a professional / technical role after a break

  • Moving up within technical and professional career paths.

The aim is to support women who want to re-train or acquire a specific SET-related skill to really help their careers take off.

Training at NVQ level 4 or equivalent is eligible within the scheme. Training at NVQ level 3 may also be supported in cases where the applicant can demonstrate its relevance to their career progression.

Awards of up to £500 are available and the first grant period will open on the 20th October 2008 and close on the 5th December 2008.

To find out who may be eligible and read more about the grant scheme visit the UKRC website

The grant scheme is just the latest support that the UKRC can offer. There is also support available for women who want to return to SET through the Open University course in Return to Science, Engineering and Technology.

For those who have already had some training or have the right experience and are looking to put it into practice a work placement with a SET employer could provide the necessary boost. We also offer bursaries to help women take this path back to employment.

About the UKRC

Half a million women in the UK are qualified in either science, engineering or technology (SET) - but less than a third work in those sectors, all of which are suffering a severe skills shortage, set to get worse in the coming decades.

The UKRC for Women in SET works to significantly improve the participation and position of women in science, engineering and technology occupations in industry, research, academia and public service to benefit the future productivity of the UK and the lifetime earnings and career aspirations of women. It is the UK's leading Centre providing information and advisory services to employers and organisations in the SET sectors and supporting women entering, returning and progressing in these fields.
