The 1 April 2008 saw the launch Skills Development Scotland.
The organisation brings together Careers Scotland, Scottish University for Industry, key elements from Scottish Enterprise, and key elements from Scottish Highlands & Islands Enterprise. Skills Development Scotland have a vision to 'be a catalyst for real and positive change in Scotland's skills performance.' They also aim to develop 'meaningful partnerships at national, regional and local levels.'
In 2007 Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, Fiona Hyslop MSP announced that there would be a new single skills body formed to take forward and deliver the vision set out in the government skills strategy 'Skills for Scotland.' Skills Development Scotland is a Non-Departmental Public Body and also registered as a limited company. Ms Hyslop has said 'Achieving sustainable economic growth for Scotland is a key aim for this Scottish Government. To do this we must ensure we have a workforce equipped with the skills which businesses need. This is an exciting time for skills in Scotland. I have set out a clear vision and principles for Skills Development Scotland and these will guide it in its work to be a catalyst for real and positive change in Scotland's skills performance.'
Willy Roe has become the first Chair of Skills Development Scotland. Roe has announced his delight at being appointed to the role, saying it is a 'pivotal role to play in achieving the Government's purpose of increasing sustainable economic growth. Change and innovation will be our big themes over the next few years, as we set high ambitions for future success.' Other permanent board members will be announced by June 2008.
