PARN Diversity Matters

 14 Apr 2008

Chris Evans, ICG Executive Director attended this conference which brought together representatives of professional bodies to discuss the findings of recent research relating to the recruitment to the professions of people from minority communities. The ICG has been involved in the research process and we have been able to challenge and rebut some of the findings which suggested that 'careers advisers' were a barrier to recruitment in many cases. We have been able to help professional organisations to understand the way that CEG works in the UK, particularly drawing attention to the significant influence of parents and families on choices.

Nevertheless careers advisers are generally perceived as unhelpful; this was borne out by the comments of Bill Rammell MP at the event when he suggested that 'all the reports' on career guidance suggest a 'major need for improvement' and that in his view 'career guidance in the UK has never been up to scratch'.
