DfES recognise that there is a need to maintain a high level of skills in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) sector. Minister for Lifelong Learning, Further and Higher Education Bill Rammell recently outlined proposals to improve information, advice and guidance regarding STEM subjects for young people.
To meet the needs of the economy and to underpin the country's science and engineering base the government intend to increase the number of young people studying STEM subjects. Part of the plan will see careers information about STEM professions becoming more readily available to young people, teachers and parents. Rammell has said that 'we are acting on the Leitch recommendations for skills and employer engagement and are determined to expand on the distinctive role of STEM subjects in producing highly skilled and employable graduates, enabling the UK plc to compete globally.' |
