The Institute this week wrote to the Chancellor Gordon Brown MP, in response to announcements in the budget to invest in the future learning opportunities for young people up to the age of 25 who will receive free tuition to study up to level 3.
The letter written by President Dr Rachel Mulvey said: "As the leading professional body for Career Education and Guidance (CEG) we welcome your emphasis to invest in the future learning opportunities for young people up to the age of 25 who will receive free tuition to study up to level 3.
"We strongly support any widening of opportunities in education, training and employment which increase life chances. However, as you will be aware, any increase in the range of opportunities calls for more guidance and support; guidance which has been restricted to particular target groups, particularly in England .
"Our Institute knows that career guidance delivered by expert professionals makes a major contribution to the lives of individuals and communities and would argue that career guidance is essential for a successful skills strategy.
"You will be aware that a major review of the provision of Information, Advice and Guidance for adults in England is due to report later this year. Current provision elsewhere in the UK ensures an all age career guidance service, which has benefits in easing transition, promoting lifelong learning and permitting economies of scale. I am confident that the Government will consider alternative models in addressing the need for an all age strategy."
ICG members will be kept informed on any future developments. |
