Scotland's Adults Urged to Seek Careers Advice that Works

 16 Jan 2006

Scotland NewsA new campaign to encourage people living in Scotland to seek professional advice about their working lives begins this week. Careers Scotland is launching an advertising campaign to urge the nation's adults to take advantage of its free and expert careers advice.

The adverts target people who are planning to return to work and workers looking for a change. As people make career resolutions in the New Year, Careers Scotland is cautioning that not all advice is good advice. Instead of turning to horoscopes or friends and family for guidance, Careers Scotland is encouraging adults living in Scotland to access their free, professional careers advice. The organisation's network of expert career advisers aims to ensure that people, of any age and at any stage in their career, have the best chance of keeping their new year's resolutions to go back to work or make the most of their current situation.

Christina Allon, director of Careers Scotland, said: "We know that there are many people who are considering a change in direction, but are unsure how to take the next step. That's where our trained advisers can help. Our free, professional careers advice can make a real difference wherever you are in your working life. Whether you are returning to work after a career break, in work but not using your skills, facing redundancy, or your employer is making changes and you're not sure where that leaves you we can help with advice that works."

Careers Scotland currently provides confidential advice and guidance to adults living in Scotland and expects the new campaign to attract a wide range of people as the job market becomes increasingly competitive. Careers Scotland aims to give everyone the skills to make realistic and effective career decisions to ensure that people are happy in their working lives while supporting the demands of Scotland's economy. The organisation has a nationwide presence, access to the most up to date labour market information, links with learning and training providers and professionally trained careers advisers.

Christina Allon continued: "As the job market in Scotland continues to change, it's vital that we think carefully and regularly about our working lives. And if you are not sure where to start, why not ask an expert?

"Careers Scotland works with young people in schools and the community, but we want people of all ages to use our services to help them get the jobs of tomorrow. I would encourage anyone who is thinking about their career to get in touch with us. For those who would prefer to meet a careers adviser face to face, visit our centres across Scotland. Simply phone the helpline to find which one is nearest. Our centres can be found across Scotland, from as far north as Inverurie, to Stranraer in the south. So, what are you waiting for? Pick up the phone or get online for advice that works."

The Careers Scotland campaign runs from January 2006 to March 2006 comprising television, radio and online advertising.
